paknews: Amnesty critical of POTO

Amnesty International has criticized India’s proposed new anti-terrorism laws.

The Indian government proposes to move a bill in Parliament to replace the Prevention Of Terrorism Ordinance (POTO) that was promulgated in October.

Amnesty said: “A vote in favour of POTB is a vote which does away with legal safeguards designed to prevent innocent persons from being prosecuted and punished.”

The bill is also “a threat to freedom of expression and association and it targets specific organisations by naming them in a list without instituting sufficient guarantees for members of these organisations who may not be involved in criminal acts,” Amnesty said.
