Chinese authorities beat, detain journalists
AFP says 10 Chinese journalists were beaten by police in Nanjing, after they tried to take photographs at an education bureau meeting.
The incident occurred on August 1 when guards associated with the eastern province of Jiangsu educational bureau refused to allow three reporters access to an invitation-only meeting, the Nanfang Weekend reported.``The guards were extremely impolite and even pushed us down the stairs,’’ the paper quoted Nanjing Morning Post reporter Wang Jinhui as saying.
Angry, Wang and others from the Nanjing Morning Post, the Jinling Evening Post and the Jiangnan Times stormed off to the Jiangsu Education Bureau headquarters demanding to speak with bureau chiefs.
But guards also denied them entry and a fight broke out when photographers snapped pictures, the newspaper said.
Several reporters were forced into an elevator and beaten, while three were detained in rooms for 40 minutes before the city police arrived.
