Another Chinese democracy advocate jailed
Another of the Chinese activists who signed a pro-democracy letter has been jailed, this time for 5 years.
Advocating democracy in authoritarian China is enough to get a person jailed. The latest example is 36-year-old former history teacher Zhao Changqing, whom the US-based organisation Human Rights in China says has been given a five-year sentence for his role in an open letter written last year urging democratic reforms and the release of prisoners of conscience.
The letter was released at the same time as an important Chinese Communist Party meeting was being held.
Mr Zhao had been charged with subverting state power.
