Vietnamese democracy activist Nguyen Dan Que has been arrested on unspecified charges. A government statement claims the arrest is not politically motivated, saying that police don’t arrest people for the reason of opinions – a claim easily disproved.

Foreign Ministry’s spokeswoman Phan Thuy Thanh said authorities took
Que into detention on March 17 after he was “caught red-handed”
committing an offence, which was not specified. Que’s whereabouts
were not disclosed.

Responding to a media query, she added in the statement: “There is
nobody arrested in Vietnam for the reason of opinions.”

“Nguyen Dan Que will be brought to trial following regulations of
Vietnam’s laws,” the statement said.
