NT announces new anti-terrorism powers

The Northern Territory joins NSW, Victoria and the Australian federal government in announcing new anti-terrorism legislation, which will include increased police search and seizure powers.


NT Chief Minister Clare Martin said the Anti-Terrorism Act would be introduced to the next sittings of NT parliament beginning in February.

“The new act will focus on counter terrorism and cover a number of issues such as search and seizure powers and amendments to better respond to chemical, biological and radiological incidents,” Ms Martin said.

The Government had been reviewing all aspects of its security arrangements, she said, including strengthening laws after the Bali bomb attacks last month and the Federal Government’s heightened terrorist threat warning.
